1.YOU-Save Money (CURED) Live Rock cost about $ 4.50 to $ 10.00 dollars a pound depending on quantity and in many cases when you receive it you have to cure it again anyway (UNCURED) Live Rock can cost anywhere from $ 1.75 pound to $7.00 pound depending on quantity.

2.YOU - Have a chance to PRESERVE a lot more of the benefit that come along with Real Live Rock, during some curing processes they pretty much wipe out most of the life, Coralline and Macro Algae by way of, well like when they are sandblasting a building or something.

"umm" makes you kind of wonder "huh".

3.YOU - Become the heart of your reef, you will begin to understand the true birth of reefkeeping what life you can save and what life will be lost. But most of all, it can be quite rewarding and impressive of what you may have on your (UNCURED) incoming LR. Life that may be RARE or just plain HARD TO GET (whatever it may be you are in full control of it).

NOW LET`S GET TO SOME LIVE ROCK CURING!

STEP ONE: Find you a reputable LFS (WHERE THEY ARE OPEN TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT YOUR NEEDS) research the time there shipment of LR comes in and you be there to purchase the pounds you will need (YOU GET TO HAND PICK THE PIECES TOO!) Or you can go by way of Internet to a reputable supplier.

STEP TWO: Upon getting your rock home, immediately submerge LR in salt water 1.024 salt gravity. Let LR sit in saltwater 15 minutes to soften some die-off that will be on the rock, the sooner you get the rock back into a stable environment the better your chances are of maintaining the life of the LR that you dont get if you purchased it (CURED!).

STEP THREE: You will then need to clean the LR, these are the tools I USE a strong bristle brush, a narrow metal chisel for digging out the die-off of sponges that will mostly likely come with the LR. I also use a Exacto Knife and toothbrush to get into some of the cracks and crevices in the LR, its much more life preserving than that sandblasting job. Do not worry about the metal tools its OK the vast Oceans and Seas has and uses iron as one of its elements. (Tools only for cleaning anyway). Clean off most of the soft die-off and trash it be careful not to scrape off the Coralline Algae or some Macro Algae cells that maybe are trying to survive under such conditions. During this process, keep the LR in the saltwater as much as possible, keeping the LR moist will help the survival of some life that may survive. You can use a 33 gallon Rubbermaid container or any (Toxin free) plastic container to accommodate the LR you are cleaning

Getting most of the soft die-off using your tools, will cut down your curing by 50%, so dig in like good old cherry pie, being careful as much as possible not to remove Coralline or Macro Algae(the more you leave the better)regeneration in your main tank will be propelled!

STEP FOUR: After cleaning submerge LR in fresh clean saltwater 1.024 salt gravity, 33 gallon Rubbermaid container. This size container will hold about 30 to 40 pounds of LR.

STEP FIVE: Hook up (2) Power heads with strong flow to supply oxygen, water movement to loosen and circulate die-off particles for removal by mechanical filtration.

STEP SIX: (1) Heater to maintain the heating balance for the life that may survive also to help soften and loosen any remaining die-off for removal.

STEP SEVEN: (1) small Mechanical Filter to take out floating die-off particles (IMPORTANT) clean filter once a week to remove particles and toxins, this is critical to assist what life that may survive !

STEP EIGHT: (1) 40 to 65 watt 50/50 Lighting the lighting is important to sustain as much life as possible, it is the source for the reproduction of cells.

USE ONLY DIONIZED WATER FOR SALT MIXTURES OR PURE OCEAN WATER
FOR BEST RESULTS.

STEP NINE: There will no doubt be an ammonia spike because of the die-off. (If you got yourself (REAL) Live Rock?) Allow yourself 3 weeks before testing for ammonia, by this time the ammonia should be at a very high level

NOW ! Do 50% WATER CHANGE no need to water change before this let your system and LR stabilize,( remember the conditions ) the LR has been out of water remember the life thats maybe trying to survive, give the LR time to acclimate itself back to its environment SALTWATER ( this part is tremendously important toward achieving your goals PRESERVING LIFE! ) You will have much more CORALLINE ALGAE and if its your birthday maybe a polyp or something in time, would`nt that be nice it can happen it happen to

STEP TEN: Do 25% water changes and test once a week now, until there are no traces of ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. When your water test positive for all three then your LR is ready to be added to your established tank.

DONT TRY TO RUSH THINGS YOU WILL SURELY FAIL, BE PATIENT!

THIS METHOD CAN ALSO BE DONE INSIDE THE TANK WITH A NEWLY SET-UP SYSTEM, NEVER PUT UNCURED LR IN YOUR ESTABLISHED TANK.
